Tesfaye Bekele Established the Suke Quto farm in 2005. Beginning with just 5 hectares of land, his goal was to implement eco-friendly farming practices under the shade of the natural forest canopy. When a bushfire destroyed most of the forest surrounding the farm, many locals turned to grow corn and teff (an ancient grain about the size of a poppy seed).
Unfortunately, these crops can lead to soil erosion leaving the land barren after just a few years. Tesfaye came up with a plan to distribute coffee plants and native shade tree seedlings to them to plant instead. There are now over 150 out-growers organically replanting the forest. Suke Quto has now grown to more than 221 hectares and is a certified organic farm. Suke Quto is a washed process, sun-dried on raised beds. Its cup is exceptionally crisp, with notes of milk chocolate, wild raw honey and refreshing tangerine.
